Lakeport Wins Prestigious Awards
From left, Sammy Angel, Miss Arkansas Katie Bailey, Sonya Walker, Ronnie Walker, Governor Mike Beebe, Paula Miles, and Ruth Hawkins Lakeport Plantation and the Angel Family won the Arkansas Heritage Award given during the Arkansas Governor's Conference on Tourism in March 2008. The Heritage Award is presented annually to an individual, organization or community that has made a significant contribution toward the preservation of some aspect of the Arkansas natural, cultural or aesthetic legacy. The Lakeport Restoration Team was the recipient of the Cultural Heritage Award given by Arkansas Delta Byways, the regional tourism association for Eastern Arkansas, at its January 2008 awards banquet. The award is given to an organization, business, community or individual that best interprets and promotes the cultural heritage of the Arkansas Delta region. Additionally, Arkansas Heritage SITES at Arkansas State University received the Diamond Award in March 2008 from the Arkansas Historical Association for leadership in restoring and developing the Lakeport Plantation, the Southern Tenant Farmers Museum in Tyronza, and the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center in Piggott. The Diamond Award is seldom given and is presented only when an individual or organization has made a significant and meritorious contribution to the understanding of Arkansas history.
